Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men

283 – Legion Quest Quest

Art by David Wynne. Wanna buy the original? Drop him a line!

In which Jay is writing a Cyclops one-shot; It is honestly truly almost Legion Quest; Mystique plays the long game; sometimes filler is a good thing; Havok is a geophysicist, not a geographer; Lila definitely stole it; and more stories should be set in space junkyards.

X-PLAINED:

  • How Betsy Braddock got her original body back
  • Marvel Snapshots: X-Men
  • The lead-up to Legion Quest
  • X-Factor #108-111
  • Mystique’s skill set
  • Legion (David Haller) (more) (again)
  • Freedom Force
  • The most powerful of devices
  • A dream about a dream
  • An intersection of unreliable narrators
  • The narrative justification for Legion Quest
  • A rock monster
  • Jornick
  • Lila Cheney (more) (again)
  • A Kurt Vonnegut reference
  • The K’Lanti
  • A space junkyard
  • The end of X-Factor’s second iconic era
  • Our favorite male/female X-friendships
  • Pros and cons of line cohesiveness

  1. Some very minor thoughts on what Marvel Unlimited allowed me to read (just the Legion Quest stuff):-

-“X-Men Deluxe” (on the cover). Do I want to know what particular sort of desperate attempt this phrase was to boost sales in the face of a collapsing market?

-“Already classic X-Men Unlimited #4.” Not a trace of irony apparent. Kelly Corvese must be *amazing* at poker.

    – “Tel Aviv Hospital.” A little thought might have suggested that a city of close to half a million people might have more than one hospital.

    – It’s nice to see Mystique acting a little more like a continuation of the character that we knew prior to XMU #4.

    1. The Deluxe is a reference to a format. It was glossier paper aimed at the Direct Market while newsstands had the regular paper. I believe Deluxe becomes standard after AoA though. I recall our hosts discuss it more indepth in another episode. I want to say the one where Jubliee leaves for Gen X.

  2. Based on your comments about the idea of Gambit mentoring Jubilee, I suspect you might be forgetting (or, just as likely, foreshadoing) the line-up of AoA’s “Gambit and the X-Ternals” (coming soon to an episode of J&MVtX-M), which has Gambit leading a team made up of Jubille, Sunspot, Lila and Guido! (I remember nothing about the comic as I never bought it, but I remember that line-up)

  3. “…commits crimes of passion with incredible logical forethought and planning.” You solidified my love of the character (Mystique) with this phrase. Great stuff, Jay!
