Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men

483 – Piotr Lovely Locks

In which a lot has happened in the Six Month Gap (and we even get to learn about some of it); we’d missed Claremontian narration; Miles has questions about Colossus’s ponytail; the Soulsword is basically a Poké Ball; the Shadow Pope is cooler than the regular Pope; and Magik has a secret.

X-PLAINED:

  • Some big news
  • X-Men: Black Sun #1-5
  • Phoenix and Psylocke’s sorta-power-swap
  • Implied continuity
  • The N’Garai
  • Belasco
  • Limbo
  • Magik (Illyana Rasputin)
  • New costumes
  • Priests vs blood magic
  • An impressively overcomplicated evil plot
  • Chekhov’s skeleton
  • Body swaps and/or possession
  • Thunderbird (Neal Sharra)
  • Pilgrimm and the Ru’tai (again, surprisingly)
  • Astral meetups
  • Confusing bloodstone math
  • A Triple-Tech
  • Magik (Amanda Sefton)
  • Counting X-generations
  • Our favorite X-decades

  1. You two were ON this week. Cracked up left and right especially every time Magik collected a Pokemon. Inspired by Claremont’s return much?

  2. I wonder if Jean’s shadowy astral form was a hint as to what had happened with the power switch with Psylocke, whereby Jean now had to imprison the Shadow King within herself using her telpathy the way apparently, that Betsy had.

So Belasco’s plan was to form a Penteggram?

Amanda’s disguise really makes even less sense than you note, since Colossus was on Excalibur with Daytripper, wasn’t he? And even if one allows for Amanda having some sort of European accents, it wouldn’t be the Russian accent that Illyana never lost.

Plus the notion that holding the Soulsword (Which I agree I’ve never warmed to as a distinct entity, it took it’s form and shape from Illyana’s magic specifically and was a part of her) also allows Amanda to create stepping discs seems awfully convenient, given that stepping discs were nothing to do with magic, they were Illyana’s mutant power.

  3. So I think the big explosion was trying to play off of some real-world physics. A superconductor, being superconductive, can carry immense amounts of current without generating heat because it has basically zero resistance. But if the temperature rises too far, it undergoes what’s called a “quench” where a section stops superconducting and suddenly has resistance after all. The result is all the current getting dumped into heat at once, which can be explosively bad if the system isn’t equipped to deal with it.
