My recommendation for a new reader is God Loves, Man Kills. It’s standalone, features most of core X-Men, and really underlines the core themes of what they X-Men stand for!
If you get the opportunity, please give the LSH “five years later” arc a chance, particularly #1-40. It is beautiful and deals with PTSD, gender rights, disability, aging, love, loss, and identity. It’s primarily drawn (beautifully) by Keith Giffen and the Bierbaums (with Al Gordon) routinely do all of that justice – particularly in the time period. To me, it’s second only to Starman.
