One thing that adds to this (which I’m not sure the writers were aware of) is that Russians almost never smile. At this point in history, Soviet internal propaganda was actually presenting smiling as an example of how untrustworthy Americans were said to be (as they smile when not reconnecting with long lost siblings, which clearly means they’re trying to butter you up to infect you with capitalism). As such, Ileana would have almost certainly have thought of smiling as incredibly inappropriate in that context.
