You guys ought to check out Captain America and the Mighty Avengers, by the way. Peter Corbeau shows up in it!
Had either of you read Hickman’s New Avengers leading up to Secret Wars? I’ve been following along as it comes out on Marvel Unlimited, and I’m wondering if I should just be patient and appreciate the build-up, or just pick up Secret Wars now.
Rachel and Miles are both genuinely excited about Secret Wars? Well I’ll be goddoomed. I’m right there along with you though!
Could not agree more regarding SECRET WARS #2. I was expecting it to just be standard summer crossover fare, despite the fact that I really like Hickman, and was just blown away by the scale of the world building. Though I think my personal panel of the week is Jamie Braddock leaping from the shield wall into the hordes of Marvel zombies at it’s base. That or all the Thors kneeling before the giant mask of Doom. Esad Ribic is so good.
I really wish I could enjoy this volume of UNCANNY AVENGERS, but you’re absolutely right that it’s just seems to be spinning its wheels, retconning Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s backstory yet again. At least it’s pretty while it’s being disappointing.
Secret Wars. It really works. It also actually reminds me a lot of Warhammer 40,000. Which I’m assuming you guys may not be as familiar with in the US. But, yeah. Chosen individuals turned into supersoldiers, fanatically devoted to their God-Emperor and dedicated to enforcing His law and will accross His many worlds.
Admittedly, it’s not unique to WH40K or Secret Wars. But they do similarly take the most ridiculous setting and handle it with unblinking gravitas.
Thanks, as always, for the reviews. Secret Wars #2 was actually good. It’s unbelievable. It’s like some weird fantasy world with lots of Kingdoms, and we get to see glimpses of the Kingdoms with hopefully more stories in each. Whenever reading fantasy novels, I always want to see into the other Kingdoms other than the main one, so maybe this will be a chance to do that. The framing story was a cool device.
Also the following line just made me go … THEY DIDN’T. – “Often they are settled unevenly–there are winners and losers in the Court of Doom. Such as the former Baroness Pryor, unseated and contained by the Baron Summers.”
I also read Ms. Marvel #15, Captain Marvel #15, Thor #8, Saga #28, and Storm #11 this week. So much awesomeness.
Oh man, I was not expecting Captain Marvel #15 at ALL, and it really threw me for a loop. I thought it would be some big, feel-good, action-y reunion comic, and instead we got… that. What an amazing, perfect issue.
Holy crap, y’all weren’t exaggerating about Secret Wars. I had fully intended to blow it off, but after your review I figured I’d give it a look. Very, very not disappointed.
