It is my sad duty to inform you that Proteus was indeed briefly resurrected in the awful X-men/X-factor/New Mutants/New Warriors Annual crossover “Kings of Pain,” in which armored villain Harness at the behest of A.I.M. uses her mutant son (SYMBOLISM) Piecemeal (on a LEASH no less) to collect Proteus’ residual energy causing Proteus and Piecemeal’s consciousness to merge and kidnap BOTH their moms until X-factor arrives and talks him/them into committing suicide.
